The Pennsylvania Department of General Services awarded Astorino a $10 million contract for the new construction of a combined Restricted Housing Unit and Medical Step-Down Unit for the State Correctional Institution (SCI) Laurel Highlands in Somerset County, PA.

This 41,000 square foot maximum security housing unit was designed to contain 20 restricted housing cells, 46 medical beds, dayrooms, multi-purpose rooms, outdoor exercise area, treatment rooms, pharmacy, support areas including a loading dock and infectious waste containment and a control room.

After successfully completing the first project, Astorino was commissioned to design a new, $11 million L3 Housing Unit totaling 33,000 squre feet. The project utilized precast concrete panels to provide the Department of Corrections with a prototype design for all future facilities. This project was bid utilizing 3 separate bid packages. One for the pre-cast cells, which also included cell design for three other state facilities.
