CONSOL Energy Arena (with Populous)
Pittsburgh, PA
Project Type: New Construction
At the start of the 2010 NHL Hockey season, the Pittsburgh Penguins will move from one of the oldest Arenas in the National Hockey League to a brand new facility. This new facility was designed by Lead Architect Populous with Astorino serving as the local Architect.
The new Arena will be located where Pittsburgh’s Hill neighborhood meets the Downtown Business District. The facility will take advantage of the toe-of-slope location to form the seating bowl, and to facilitate access to all levels of the arena. The Downtown-facing west side of the building will offer a large glassed entry and circulation spine facing the City. Fans will enter at the busy Fifth Avenue commercial corridor at the southwest of the building, or at the main concourse entry directly facing the City, on a level intermediate to the seating bowl. Inside, escalators and stairs will lead to every level of the bowl.
