Louis D. Astorino
CEO, Chairman

Mr. Louis Astorino founded Astorino in 1972 and serves as Chairman of the firm. Mr. Astorino is actively involved in the firm's architectural design quality reviews, strategic planning, business development and executive leadership. Under his leadership, the firm has been consistently ranked as one of America's top 500 Design Firms by Engineering News Record. Beyond his leadership role at Astorino, Mr. Astorino received the 2007 Golden Achievement Award from Junior Achievement, was recognized as the 2005 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Real Estate & Construction category, and was one of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s 2001 Pittsburgh’s Top 50 Business Leaders.

A much honored member of the architectural profession, Mr. Astorino was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 1987; received the Alumni Achievement Award of the College of Arts and Architecture from the Pennsylvania State University in 1989; was made an Alumni Fellow by the Pennsylvania State University in 1991; and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University in 2006. Mr. Astorino has also served as President of the American Institute of Architects, Pittsburgh Chapter, and as President of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects. He was a co-founder of the AIA Pittsburgh Architects Workshop, as well as a member of the AIA National Design Committee, and was a Jury member for the AIA College of Fellows from 2003-2006. He has served as a guest speaker at the Harvard Graduate School of Design on the subject of "The Role of Subconscious Thought on Emergency Room Design", the 2004 National AIA Convention, the 2004 Commencement Ceremony at Carnegie Mellon University and ASHE's International Conference on Health Facility Planning, Design and Construction on the subject of "Building on Metaphor: Unlocking the Hidden Thoughts and Feelings." Mr. Astorino most recently spoke at the PPG Color Share Forum on “Mysteries of the Mind: Translating Subconscious Thought into More Meaningful Design”. He has spoken throughout the country and as far away as New Zealand on the history, design concepts, and Astorino restoration work at Fallingwater.

Mr. Astorino previously served the Board of Directors Committee and Executive Committee for the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, as well as being Co-Chair of its International Committee. He was appointed by the Governor of Pennsylvania to serve on the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry's Industrial Board and the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial Commission. He also served on Governor Rendell's 2003 Transition Committee for the Department of General Services.

Aside from his professional and civic involvement, Mr. Astorino is involved in a number of charitable organizations, including the Board of the Extra Mile Foundation. He serves on the Advisory Board for the Little Sisters of the Poor, and is a member of the Christian Leaders Fellowship Christmas Creche Committee. He serves as the Chairman of the Duquesne Club Wine Committee, and was elected to the Board of Laurel Valley Golf Club. He is a past Board member of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, and is a former Chairman of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.

With more than 30 years of professional architectural experience, Mr. Astorino brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to each and every project team. He maintains a strong personal involvement in each project, and does not hesitate to actively participate in project design reviews. Mr. Astorino's focus on teamwork and innovate design have contributed to the firm's success throughout the country and around the world. Some of the projects successfully completed under his direct supervision include the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Vatican City; the Domus Sanctae Marthae (the Hospice Santa Marta), Vatican City; the Trimont condominium high-rise in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; the historic preservation of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, Mill Run, Pennsylvania; PNC Park, the new Pirate stadium (with HOK Sports); PNC Firstside Center, PNC's new operation center; the spring training facility for the Pittsburgh Pirates, McKechnie Field, Bradenton, Florida; the Roberto Clemente Memorial Statue, PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and the design of a European transplant hospital for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Palermo, Italy. Mr. Astorino is currently involved in the design of the replacement hospital for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Astorino received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Pennsylvania State University in 1969. He is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects and is a registered professional architect in the States of Pennsylvania; Arizona; Connecticut; Florida; Illinois; Indiana; Maryland; Massachusetts; Michigan; New York; North Carolina; Ohio; Virginia; and West Virginia.
