Dept. of Energy - National Energy Technology Lab (NETL)
Morgantown, WV
Project Type: New Construction
Project Cost: $16 million
Astorino is providing architectural design services for the Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory's new technology support center. Approximately 80% of this facility is comprised of offices and computer laboratories, while the remaining 20% is a high-tech visitor's demonstration center, where visitors can learn about new alternative energy technology being researched. This new building will house over 200 employees.
Many key sustainable design features are being implemented in NETL. One of the highlights is a hybrid air system, often used to increase comfort and control while conserving energy. The facility will also feature a green roof, which uses a lightweight tray to support low growing plants. These plants provide evaporative cooling, convert carbon dioxide to oxygen, and reduce storm water runoff. Other items include operational windows, solar sunscreens, and plug-and-play (modular wiring) technology. |
